I know that I am very late in listening to this podcast but it is awesome!!!! I should mention that the restaurant in DCA where you can get clam chowder in a bread bowl is called Boudin’s and pronounced Beau-deans. Just FYI. Keep up the great job! I love listening and reading everything even though I’ve only dreamt about going to WDW.

Great idea with the “Dream Meal” concept. As Disney foodies, my wife and I think about this kind of stuff often. I would take it a few steps farther and come up with a 5 course menu:

Cocktails: Cucumber Margarita @ La Cava and the barrel-aged Rob Roy at Blue Zoo (must have at least two cocktails)

Bread course: the flat bread sampler at Sanaa w/ all of the dips/spreads

Appetizer: selection of cheeses and cured meats from Tutto Gusto (the “Duck in all its Glory” from Cali Grill would be a close 2nd)

Salad: the appetizer version of the Cobb Salad at Brown Derby

Entree: Oak-grilled Filet Mignon from Jiko

Sides: Roasted bone marrow, savory truffle and hazelnut crunch donut filled with yukon gold potato and red currant gastrique from Artist Point AND Leek-fontina-truffle laced trofie macaroni and cheese from FLying Fish

Dessert: Salted Caramel & Clement Rum martini from L’Artisan des Glaces

Nightcap: Press-pot coffee from Kouzzina

Anyway, cool idea to ponder. Great show!

I was surprised that you didn’t even mention Carthay Circle in the DCA segment, but not surprised that it wasn’t picked as a favorite. We ate there last November, and it was not a good experience. We arrived 20 minutes early for our reservation, and weren’t seated until 40 minutes later. There were a lot of other families waiting, and not enough seating available for them, so we had to stand for at least half that time.

Once we were seated, the food was just fine, but, again, not quite worth the price. I would rather pay a little more to eat at Napa Rose and get higher quality food and better service. Also, they have an open kitchen, which is pretty noisy and completely at odds with the rest of the period decor.

Overall, I would say that Disney seems to have trouble marrying the concept of the “fine dining” restaurant with the theme park experience. If I’m in the park, I don’t want to spend lots of time waiting through a leisurely meal. I want to be seated relatively quickly, eat dinner at a normal pace, and then get back out and go on rides and see shows. I would argue that Blue Bayou is the only one that really gets it right.

(And I’m not counting some of the restaurants in Epcot, like Le Cellier, where you do go to the restaurant for the experience.)

Overall, another great show. We haven’t been to a Disney Park since January–a fairly ill-fated trip to WDW that so epically failed, we ended up with a 25% refund–but listening to you guys makes me eager to go back, just to eat!

Buy the way you two are doing great! Hope to meet up with you AJ sometime in the future & hope to see you and your wife again Brad.

By the way, have either one of you had a pickle from the pickle stand in EPCOT near Test Track. They are great, especially on a hot day. Try one, you wont be disappointed. See you on Grownups!

UPA — Great suggestions! Regarding offsite, we mention in the podcast that heading just a bit outside of the gates brings you to plenty of lower-priced chain restaurants that can offer a break for your wallet.

Some of the tips (sharing, prioritizing bites) seem to fall under the eat less food category which applies universally instead of getting more bang for your buck.

What offsite places do you guys recommend?

Other suggestions:
– Similar to offsite, you could do a few meals in your room. Breakfasts might be the most convenient, and you can get groceries through Garden Grocer or sometimes a grocery run is included in the car service.
– Offsite meals are even more of an option at DL, where decent options are within easy walking distance.
– Free samples: Ghiradelli, does Boudin in DCA still give out bread cubes?
– Connect with the non-Disney restaurants for special offers or discounts: Earl of Sandwich’s email list, Cava’s twitter feed
– You can buy meal vouchers for DL character meals that can save a few bucks, especially in peak season. (vouchers include tax/tip)

We have a breakfast ADR there for January because my daughter (7 years old) is really into Alice – we were going to let her wear her Alice dress to breakfast that morning. Now I’m worried…

That said, the people dining at Be Our Guest is going to be a very small percentage of the population, so for most of us, for all intents and purposes, it will still be the same tea-totaling place we all know and love. My concern is that this will be the gateway restaurant so to speak, and it will be commonplace at other restaurants…I mean come on Liberty Tree Tavern has the word “Tavern” in it. In order for the atmosphere to be “authentic,” they have to serve beers, right? I am being silly, but I think you get the point.

Wonderful, warm voice, lovely laugh, delightful comments and helpful insights.

I suppose that’s completely obvious to any/every listener, but sometimes people don’t say things like that, so… there’s that.

P.S. I’ve been to character dining 3 times at Cinderella’s Royal Table and enjoyed it every time. The food is no Le Cellier, but I’ve always enjoyed each course (especially their grilled chicken pasta), and seeing all the princesses at once makes everything taste better, no?

I have actually had my best ever steak, a Filet, at The Turf Club in Saratoga Springs Resort. That is an excellent restaurant and very much a hidden gem. Easy to get in without a reservation and quality as good as any of the signature restaurants.

I was hoping the reviews would be, for lack of a better word, more “reviewish”. You gave the great restaurant info you always give, but it did not have the getting down to the nitty gritty critique feel of a review. That being said, I have never felt the show lacked quality restaurant information. You have given us lots of great ideas for places to try when we finally get to Disneyland.

I am anxiously awaiting a Food & Wine Festival Preview / Review Show. 117 days until we are there!

I love the onion soup as well; I believe they pour the soup over the cheese and breadcrumbs. I also recommend the au gratin potato brick, and the crab cakes.

Normally, I can’t save room for dessert, but last time, we did order the chocolate cake. It lives up to its reputation, but I recommend ordering it if you can keep leftovers in a fridge. Trying to eat it all at once is madness.

On the subject of Brad, I don’t think he should be banned from making jokes. He should, however, be banned from being annoying. That would include trying to force corny jokes into the opening, repeating things that AJ says word for word as if that, in itself, is funny, and whining about people not liking his jokes. When he’s not trying so hard, he’s really entertaining, insightful, and funny. When he is trying, he’s the podcast’s biggest liability, even more so than the occasionally-too-long musical bridges.

Finally, I have a question for a future podcast: my wife and I are visiting WDW next January. What are your favorite recommendations for vegetarian options, at any of the WDW parks, at any restaurant?

Have to disagree about Storytellers on this episode. To me, it’s Denny’s / Coco’s quality food for double the price (even with the cornbread). The dinner buffet is just meh. Service is usually lousy too.

Trader Sam’s is a great pick. You can also sit outside and enjoy the sunshine with your pupu platter.

Whitewater Snacks or Ralph Brennan’s Express are two other good options for lunch jaunts.

I also agree on Coral Reef in Epcot having the best atmosphere!

3. What restaurants have the best view of Illuminations in Epcot, and can you reserve VIP viewing?
Book your reservations early and try to for a 7pm seating or 7:30pm and relax and sit back till Illuminations. I definitely loved the Rose & Crown because there is a special area for those who eat inside and great table space outside. We also like Tokyo Dining with the huge windows.

We were self-conscious at first being there without our kids, but the characters were good at judging our desired level of interaction (which wasn’t incredibly high — I wasn’t feeling well that morning), and so they spent a short amount of time with us (usually making us laugh) and then moved on. It was perfect — we weren’t ignored, but we didn’t feel forced to have a long interaction with each character.

I agree with Brad — bottom is the place to be at Garden Grill. We sat up top during our December trip and the view was not as exciting from up there. I thought the entrees were just ok, but the salad there is really yummy. And the character interaction was fantastic! We saw each of the characters (Chip, Dale, Mickey & Pluto) at least twice, and those naughty chipmunks really made us laugh.

I agree with what you implied about transportation from the MK. Both of you said to take the boat. Around lunch I’ve always found that you can usually get on the next one, it’s not too crowded, and a relaxing and quick way to get to most of the hotels (I think it’s faster to walk to the Contemporary).

Oh, right. Food. My choice for a quick jaunt is a 4:00 trip to tea at the Grand Floridian. It opens at 2:00, which is perfect for a late lunch, and the last seating is at 5:00, ideal for an early dinner. The service is just ok, but the food is enough for a meal. It’s light, but filling. Some people might need to have a desert at the park as the night wears on, however these are the tough sacrifices one must make when they have an early lunch. Cold cucumber finger sandwiches are perfect for a hot day at the park.

Ok, technical point about the podcast. Some of the fade outs on the bumper tracks were a little abrupt. That’s all. Good show.
